Why do thousands of pet lovers in the U.S.
choose snails as pets?

Ease of Care

Snails are incredibly low-maintenance compared to more traditional pets like dogs or cats. They require minimal space, their feeding is straightforward, and their habitats are simple to maintain. This ease of care appeals to pet lovers who may have limited time or space but still wish to enjoy the companionship of a pet.

Allergy-Friendly

For individuals or families with allergies to fur or feathers, snails are an excellent pet option. They offer the experience of pet ownership without the risk of allergic reactions, making them suitable for a wide range of homes.

Stress Relief

The slow, deliberate movements of snails can be surprisingly calming to observe. In today's fast-paced world, the quiet presence of a snail can serve as a form of stress relief or mindfulness practice, helping people to slow down and appreciate the moment.

Educational Interest

Snails offer fascinating insights into the natural world. Watching snails can be educational for children and adults alike, teaching lessons in biology, ecology, and responsibility. Schools and educational programs often adopt snails to help teach these concepts in a hands-on, engaging way.

Terrarium or Aquarium

Substrate

Food & Water

A glass or plastic terrarium or aquarium serves as a good home for snails. The size and type depend on how many snails you plan to keep and your budget.

Chemical-free soil, peat moss (mixed with calcium), coconut fiber,  or sphagnum moss can be used as a substrate at the bottom of their habitat. It should be deep enough for burrowing and kept moist (not wet) to help maintain humidity.

Snail food should consist of a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens to meet their nutritional needs (you can grow it yourself or buy it in a supermarket). Also, you can prepare food for snails yourself (on the Internet you'll find a lot of free recipes) or buy ready-to-use special food for land snails, Water for snails must be pure and dechlorinated.

Snails thrive in a humid environment. Aim for about 75-85% humidity, which can be achieved with regular misting. Room temperature is typically adequate, but aim to keep the habitat at 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid placing the habitat in direct sunlight or near drafts.

A food dish and water dish for snails should be shallow and have smooth edges to ensure easy access and safety. It must be made from non-toxic soft material,  such as silicone or food-grade plastic, to prevent harm.

Calcium for snails is crucial for the development and maintenance of their shells. Providing a constant source, such as special calcium sticks for snails, cuttlebone, or calcium-rich foods, ensures their healthy growth and shell strength.
